I asked hTC Tech Support yesterday as to whether they will be releasing Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) for the Wildfire and they said "No."

So, it looks like Froyo will be the last Android update for Wildfire!

I'm not certain now of three things:

1.  Is it because Gingerbread is too CPU heavy for Wildfire to handle?
2.  Will hTC continue to update the Wildfire with their own patches and updates (for example, Sense updates to reflect changes seen in newer hTC phones)?
3.  Where is Google going with Android?  It seems a bit confusing right now, with Gingerbread being the latest for conventional mobile phones, but Honeycomb being specific for tablets, yet both having the same 'sequence' of version numbers, ie. 2.3 and 3.0, respectively.

See attached copy of response from hTC.

I'm not sure about any of your thoughts but maybe a custom gingerbread rom may come along for the wildfire?

there already is, called CM7 but it doesn't have htc sense. there is a few devs working on a sense gingerbread rom but no luck as yet. you would have to be running 2.1 to be able to root phone and flash a custom rom though, no root access for 2.2 for now.

Just seen on the Coming Soon page on the Vodafone site that Wildfire S is on its way
http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/shop/mobile-phone/htc-wildfire-s
and that it will have Gingerbread 2.3.

So one would assume if your info is correct, that it must have an updated CPU or configuration.

Oh well, can't say I'm too bothered, even though I've only just got my Wildfire. It does virtually everything I've hoped it would, and has got me hooked on Android Smart Phones, specifically HTC.

http://www.htc.com/www/product/wildfires/specification.html

So 600MHz cpu instead of 528MHz, smaller capacity battery of 1230mAh v 1300mAh

Hmm, interesting trade off between Wildfire and Wildfire S - can run gingerbread (and poss Flash 10.1?) yet battery won't last as long (!)

@ Nathan:  The info I have provided is from hTC Tech Support themselves - that is the official line.  I'm not talking about rooted/hacked units and other developments that might bring Gingerbread to the hTC Wildfire.  I was just curious to ask about Gingerbread that's the response I received from hTC.

@ npharrison:  That is an interesting trade-off indeed.  I don't suppose that the Wildfire S battery is actually denser, despite having a lesser capacity?  Perhaps improved in some way to last longer than the current (albeit higher capacity) Wildfire battery?

I don't know, I'm just guessing at this, but I'd certainly be interested in getting more power out of my Wildfire, before I retire it, which I'm hoping won't be for some time to come, as I've only recently got it.

Wildfire S does not interest me at all - it's not enough of a leap in technology to make me want to get it, eg. the CPU speed is not much of an improvement, considering one can 'overclock' the Wildfire's CPU.  If I was to get another smart phone (and undoubtedly, it would be an hTC), I'd go for a different model completely.

I still think this is just a lame excuse to artificially augment Wildfire S sales by thinking that ppl will just rush to the S model just because of few extra goodies.

Screen is far worse than even the one on Nokia 5230 (resolution wise), camera is not that hot and its auto autofocus is annoying, it can only record crappy video (not even 640x480), at least give us the Gingerbread for christ sake HTC. If the S model will sell, it most definitely won't because of the Gingerbread. So why hold us Wildfire users back?

here, HTC Wildfire S has been introduced with the Android Gingerbread in the market, as i have visited some web portals.... friends you must be happy that the latest handset Wildfire S has been brought with some more features and applications.. and it has been brought with the lucrative deals also in the market where you would find many benefits...

@ gragmilton:  I'm not sure who you're trying to comfort with your words!  Your paragraph does not make much sense.

I couldn't care less about the Wildfire S - it's NOT the phone I've got and I bought my Wildfire with a PAYG SIM and then use it with a work SIM that I have no control over - so I cannot afford to buy a new phone every 6 months.

The Wildfire is not that short in terms of specification versus the Wildfire S, so why isn't Gingerbread and Sense 3.x being released for it?

Why is hTC being so stingy and FORCING customers to move to a new model every 6 months?!
